I caved, and bought a 'travel lens'.

Some time ago I'd asked opinions on lenses to get/take to Europe, on a Mediterranean cruise with lots of shore excursions.   My dilemma, such as it was, was whether or not to take my F2.8 zoom trinity, take only the 24-70 (forget wider, and crop D800 images for longer), or perhaps get one or more smaller, lighter lenses.

In the past I've used a D200 with 18-200vr, but I just couldn't live with the overall lack of sharpness there, so ended up the 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 (and 80-400g).

I did find that I can stuff the 14-24, 24-70 and 80-400 (or 70-200) into my Thinktank waist bag, putting the body in an attached Thinktank 'Chimp cage'.   Heavy, but at least packable.

I had previously ruled out just getting a 24-120 lens, partly because I really like my 24-70 a lot, and partly because I hear 70-120 isn't all that great on the 24-120.

Today I went to Tempe Camera and handled a 70-200f4 and 16-35f4 for the first time.   Both lenses seemed almost tiny compared to what I have now.

And I caved.  I bought the 16-35, and I'll be taking that to Europe, leaving the 14-24 behind.   It's just soooo much easier to pack.   A usable focal range, and I can mount a CP on it should I choose to.

I'll bring the 80-400g as well.   If I need long for something, I might as well have LONG rather than just 200mm.   Likely it will be stay on the cruise ship for walking tours of Venice and the like, but at least I'll have the option.   Got to admit, that 70-200f4 was a sweet little lens.   But I think one lens was enough to buy right now, and wider is more likely to be useful than longer in Europe.

My wife plans to leave her D80 and 18-200vr behind, and commandeer my V2 with 10-100vr.
