This was the first lens I bought after purchasing my first crop-sensor Canon DSLR, and I have no regrets. It's big and somewhat heavy, but it gives you a great range of focal lengths and good to excellent all around quality and feel. Photos are sharp and great color. Not quite up to the build quality of an L lens, but worth the price.

while this is a good lens, for me, it was and 17-40mm f4 lens that i used on my 40D quite a bit. but now that i have purchased my 24-70mm f2.8II on my new 1Dx, the 17-40 is taking a back seat i just love the iq and characteristics of "L" lenses!

cheerz.

Last month I had the choice between EF-S 17- 55mm f2.8 IS and EF 17- 40mm f4 L. I do like the build quality of L' s - but in this case I went for 17- 55mm . For me f2.8 + IS versus f4 and no IS was the deal maker. Where I live the two lenses are priced the same - but as I shoot cropped sensor I think it was okay to do without L quality. Aside from the fact that 17 -40mm is an older design than the 17 -55mm ..

Of course I could also have chosen to invest more than twice as much as I gave for the 17- 55mm - and gone after the latest 24-70 f2.8 II. And parted with the widest end of the range ... and IS. For me, the comparison between L and not L is a bit like comparing apples and pears

And I have not had a single regret since I bought the lens. I think 17-55 is a perfect all- round tool for me on my T3i/600D . I have a range to suit my needs : Landscape , portraits architecture ( ... and everything in between :-)). IQ is excellent and build quality OK for my needs .. So all in all : I more than agree with SkiShooters 4.5 stars
