Agreed about the masts. Actually I was almost willing to through this photo into waste basket because of the cut  masts. I experienced this frustration at the moment of shooting in fact... Probably the best solution would be to cut them even lower to make an impression of free will of photographer rather than forced framing

As to the light - it was strange indeed, you are spot on here. The shadow cast by the buildings on the other side of the bay/channel covered the spot where this couple was sitting just a few minutes before - see the photograph shot from the different angle. 
If I would decide to print this photograph - yes, it would worth to play with fine tuning.

To my taste this is a much better photo than the first one. Much better atmosphere. Thanks for posting.
