I don't think pixel count is the issue. IMO it's the rugged and dependable body that attracts people. The D300/D300s is also a camera that many still use and value, despite the same 12MP. The D600/D610 is not at the same level, like the D7000/D7100 in comparison to the D300/s. Nikon is missing the market for rugged and fast bodies w/o built-in grip, which they created with the Dn00 lines (D100-D300 and D700).
