You had a constitutional right to be there, but don't expect workers or police to know or care about your rights.  I discovered in April that you had better do what the police say even if you are legally within your rights to do otherwise.  You can be correct, and still wish that you had not insisted.  Three lawyers told me that the police had no right to detain me (one of the lawyers teaches constitutional law).  Unless you are willing to sue, it is best to let them be bullies.
