D800 - Best AF fine tooling approach...

I also went through extensive testing and adjustments with FoCal software on my D800 and lenses. FoCal presents everything in a very neat and scientific looking way. But in real world shooting the suggested values do not seem to be that good.

I think the fundamental problem with FoCal's method is that it's all bases on measuring how blurry the test target is while taking several test shots at different AF fine tune settings. It cannot see how the actual focus has shifted, and where to it has shifted.

I agree, the manual method of shooting an angled surface (with a flat target to focus on) and visually adjusting the AF is more tedious, but a better method.

BTW, I would recommend to test and adjust your lenses at the distance you use them most.
