Re: Makes sense, since the EM1 is a specialty item

This camera was designed for people with a large investment in 4/3 lenses who wanted a way to use them on a more modern camera. If the E3 image quality is good enough for you (and it certainly IS pretty darn good) then why would you want a $1400 camera that doesn't handle as well as they camera you already own?

For people without HG and SHG lenses, then the EM5, GH3, EP5 or GX7 makes much more sense. The EM1 offers virtually no major improvement over those cameras, other than PDAF ability.

Compared to the E-M5, the E-M1 provides some nice improvements:

  • improved AF tracking
  • faster AF of HG/SHG lenses
  • a true grip
  • larger viewing size EVF
  • higher res LCD screen
  • 1-stop better IBIS
  • auto CA correction
  • focus peaking
  • 1/8000 sec shutter
  • Wi-Fi
  • more buttons to minimize menu diving
  • more room for same for less fumbling about

But unlike the similarly backwards numbering sequenced K5 compared to the K7, it does not show appreciable improvement in IQ, if any at all. For this reason it seems more of an E-M5+ than a new model, and I can easily see all of the E-M1 improvements showing up in the coming E-M5 successor with a price between $850-$1000.

On price, if Pentax can build a weathersealed K50 with the excellent K5 16MP sensor and sell it for $600, Olympus can certainly produce a weathersealed full-featured consumer level mFT body for $700-800 or so. Finally, a very long overdue replacement for the E-xxx series and at a similar size. I think they'd sell a few .

I can wait.  In the meantime, my E-M5 purchased for $750 with kit lens (mfr refurb) works just fine as my E-620 upgrade.
