Why most everyone choose Nikon for their first dslr?

back in 1996, when I bought my first REAL camera, Nikons were way out of my price range. The options were Pentax, Minolta, and Canon. Even then, Canons had the advantage as they had the most promotion, with Andre Agassi and his "Rebel" line, and also that they included perks at the retail stores like including a free Canon camera bag.

Back then I spent over $600 teenager bucks on an entry-level Minolta. I think Nikons only started at $800.

If people are buying Nikons as their first cameras, it makes their prestige look way horrible. They used to be like BMWs; unattainable for a first-timer.
