That and the short registration distance and compact lightweight forms they are shooting for require tighter tolerances to achieve the same performance of the A-mount versions.

I would not be foolish enough to guess at what kinds of tolerances Sony can achieve.   But it does not seem too far out of line to observe that they are trying to build lenses that are a measure more difficult to produce in quantity while maintaining high quality than A-mount or similar sized lenses from Canon/Nikon/Pentax.   I am amazed that we don't see more of a price premium for E-mount lenses considering the technical difficulty of what they are trying to achieve.
