You are confusing "(focus) field curvature" with "distortion".

Well, whether confused or not,

field curvature can also be complex, and not just a "curve". This is sometimes apparent in lens tests wide open, where the lens is a bit sharper in the center, then it gets a bit softer as you go outside, but then it gets a bit sharper again before it gets softer at the edge.
