Roger Cicala, who tests hundreds of lenses for Lens Rentals, has written quite a bit about this. The gist of it seems to be that variations are usually quite small and show up only in close comparison. Plus camera variations come into play and can make a lens look better (or worse) on one body than another. But there are a few not-so-hot samples of most lenses out there.
