You have too many distracting OOF elements in the first photo.
I have so many squirrel photos, since they're such an easy subject , that I don't even try to photograph them anymore. At any given minute there's at least 5-10 in my backyard.
The 70-300 is far better as a "walk around" zoom in any event, and at least at the web sized images you posted , and equally as sharp.
