Spo tlight on the face

This picture is what I want to avoid.

It is possible not to blow out the face when there is a direct light on an actor?  Should I use spot metering?

Shot with these settings on a EOS 500D

Mode was Av at 2.8, 1/10 sec using Auto WB at ISO 1600, set to evaluative metering and auto focusing on the face.

I was standing about three rows back using a EFS 17-55mm IS lens with a focal length of 48mm per the EXIF info,  negative exposure compensation set to the dot right before -1.
