Create a backup or test copy of some photos and try something like this, it should do what you want:

exiftool -tagsfromfile %d%f.XMP -xmp:subject -overwrite_original -ext CR2 /path/to/your/photos

-tagsfromfile tells exiftool to copy tags from one file to another

%d%f.XMP will match all XMP files as the source

-xmp:subject specifies the metadata to copy. In this case it is where the keywords are stored in the XMP file.

-overwrite_original means the CR2 file will be overwritten with the updated version. If you don't specify this, exiftool will create a copy of the file (called *.CR2_original) beforehand.

-ext CR2 specifies the target file type to copy to.

/path/to/your/photos tells Exiftool where to find your photos.
