I have had a D70s, D300 and D800 and all suffered from dust.

I never realised there was a dust issue until I started shooing macro which needs f16 or smaller to get the DoF needed. That was on my D70s.

My D300 and D800 have needed cleaning, early on in both cases as the shutter and mirror movement caused dust to be re-arranged. So I cleaned them. I then check about every 6 months or so unless I see it in my pictures.

However I never go narrower than f9 except by accident or when shooting macro.

Yes, you can get the sensor clean by repeatedly doing wet cleans, you slowly get better at it so it takes fewer goes.

Personally I get it almost perfect or perfect, try the camera out at f8, if it doesn't show anything then thats clean enough for me. It needs to be a large spec of dust to show up at f8 and is easy to get off.
