Very loaded question, like asking should I use my 24mmm or my 85mm to take a picture of that tree over there.  Each accomplishes different things, there is no right or wrong if the image looks like what you visioned in your mind.  For portraits, yes a narrow depth of field has a nice way of isolating the subject, for flowers in front of that waterfall lots of DOF may be needed.
