Canon 24-105mm - is it worth $300 repair?

Hi fellow Canon owners -

I have had this lens for about 6 years, and recently it started to fail with the Err 01 "miscommunication between lens contact and camera". A search on the net found that many people have had this problem, and it was attributed to a broken wire in the lens electronics - many also think it's a design flaw and Canon should recall this product. I sent it to the Canon repair center and the estimate just came back at a little over $300, so I find myself in this debate - is it worth to put down $300 to repair a 6-yr-old lens, while a new one costs around $730 ? I like the zoom range of 24-105 on 5D, there seems to be no good alternatives. I also found it very disappointing and uneasy to own and depend on a lens that could fail so soon and so frequent (among other owners), my other lens have lasted 10+ years and never had any problems.

Hope to hear your thoughts, what you would do in this situation...

thanks,

Jason
