Pancakes for the SL1, you vote!

Too bulky and heavy and I don't like older Sigma lenses.

It is NOT bulky and NOT heavy for an 1.4 lens. It is super new too (2013).

• Canon EF 24mm f2.8 (and 24mm f2.8 IS USM). Compact primes with good optics.
• Canon EF 35mm f2 (and 35mm f2 IS USM). Compact standard primes with good optics.

Again aware, a bit expensive the new versions are. Think pancake, small.. light, affordable. Like the 40mm f/2.8 Canon you pointed out.

They are very affordable and they are small and they are light. If you can't afford the new ones, look at the old ones. Pancakes usually have horrible bokeh and stronger CA.

• Tokina 35mm f2,8 DX macro. Discontinued, but a compact and nice 1:1 macro and standard prime.

Discontinued, nuff said.

• Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II. Light, cheap and compact, usable for shorter portrait lens.

A viable alternative, so far I count 2 lenses. But it's not a pancake design.

Oh, now this is a "viable alternative", but the 24mm and 35mm not? Ok...

For portrait primes, the Tamron 60mm f2 Di II macro and Canon EF-S f2.8 USM Macro are nice and compact also.

You missed the point of the poll. Pancake lenses. Small, light, and thin- more so than the current lenses in the lineup. Exactly the reason why Canon made the 40mm f/2.8 in the first place.

Canon made the 40mm because it is a 40mm. They are easy to make for EOS mount (44mm flange distance) in pancake design. There are two other pancake design focal length lenses available even (Voigtlander), and if you dismiss them because they are manual focus, you are shooting yourself in the foot. Plenty of small lenses available for the SL1/100D, ranging from 20mm to 60mm. Stop moaning?
