You have a different problem.

I'm so glad I found this thread today! I bought my 24-105 f4 L from Amazon in August 2012 and did not start noticing focusing problems until April 2013 while shooting a family portrait session outdoors. The lens made strange sounds and although it eventually seemed to focus, the photos were soft, if not altogether out of focus. I tested it on both my 7D and 5D mk ii, with and without IS, in studio and on location. I found that for every 3 photos I took only one at most would be in focus. I can't imagine how there can possibly be so many rave reviews about this lens when mine is a piece of junk. After paying $850 for this lens & spending the last decade investing in Canon L glass, I feel that the words "bad copy" should never have to be used. I'm using my 85 mm 1.8 & 35 mm 1.4 L for family portraits, along with my 70-200 2.8 ii & 16-35 2.8 ii for weddings. I'm too disgusted to send the 24-105 back to Canon. How nice it would have been to have found a Canon mid-range zoom. I hope everything worked out for you..

The problem we have is that the aperture motor interferes with the IS, thus shooting at any F-stops other than F4 would produce motion blur.  AF works fine for me.

Canon fixed our problem by replacing a circuit board.  They did not say what the circuit does.
