Having owned three D40s and now my current D5100, I would say that the high ISO on the D5100 is light years beyond the D40. That's why I bought a D5100 in the first place is because I attempted to do low light indoor stuff with my D40 and the noise above 800 (and even at 800) was just too prominent and blocky. Noise=weird colors and when toned down=smeared details.

The D5100's noise doesn't start until 1600 (barely) and is fine grained and a lot easier to deal with in DeNoise or DFine than the D40.

I really liked my D40, it handles roughly like my D5100 but it's just not in the same class as the D5100.

So what do you think about the 3200 as an alternative to the 5100?
