Are fast lenses over rated on digital?

The forum is full of wishes for faster lenses and complaints that newly released lenses are too slow.

Do we really get worthwhile gains beyond about 2.8 and maybe 3.5?

Consider the following article from DXo

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/en/Reviews/F-stop-blues

wider glass adds lost of weight and expense.. It does give shallower dof but this isn't such a big issue on Nex--I'd accept that wider glass might, possibly but not certainly, give slightly faster focus.

In view of the points raised in the Dxo article re the issues with wide lens on digital, are they worth it?
