What a disappointing situation with the 17mm lens! Why?

I think the rule of what a normal lens is, from the perspective of ease of design, is based in ten register distance between lens and film. For 35mm, this happened to be around 50mm, so 50mm or longer was easy to design. I'm not sure how this pans out for Micro Four Thirds.  Certainly, in terms of reaching perfection, Olympus has done better at longer focal lengths for its primes, whereas its wider lenses seem to have inherent compromises.

However, I still contend that the ultimate measure of a lens is in the image it produces.  In this respect, even the 17mm f2.8 pancake is capable enough, if you are aware of its limitations.
