I'm not saying this is the case with the 20mm lens, but it is a (remote) possibility.

Paul, please do not blame innocent lens. Under the hump of OMD there is a humming device called IBIS that produce highest frequency IMF, and before pointing to the lens, I'd look under the hump.

The IBIS has been ruled out before. You can switch it off in the E-PL5 and E-PM2. Banding is still visible without IBIS.
