One of the things on my to-do list is to rig my hood (yes, I got a hood for this lens)

Hey, I use the (cute little) hood too.  Functions very well.  The MPE has such great color and contrast natively that I hate to lose any of it to veiling glare from my flash head (being so close to the objective lens).

with LED lights. The main purpose would be for focusing, not for illuminating the final picture.

Most recently, for example, I took pictures of some sleeping long-horned bees. I had to use a flashlight to see what I was doing. LEDs in the hood would have been way more convenient.

Yeah, I shoot macros at night at times too (some of the most interesting critters appear only after dark!).  And it can indeed be hard to rig a flashlight for focusing.  You'll have to post what you come up with!

While I'm at it, I'll see if I can make a lens cap for the hood.

And that too!

Good luck.  Happy shooting!
