Not only is the 18-35 not 18-70, it's also not 16-70! The coverage of these lenses is substantially different. It's fine to say that you would rather Sony have brought a very large, fast wide to normal zoom to market than the 16-70. But the size of the 18-35 really has no bearing on what a faster 16-70 could have been.
