AF-ON focusing

Noticed a few threads on this over last few months. Has anyone else noticed that if they de couple focusing to the AF-ON button so the shutter only takes the photograph, that focusing is a WHOLE LOT more accurate and consistent? It seems stupidly so, especially in low light. I wondered if anyone else noticed this too. For some really strange reason (even post firmware update) in low light I am still getting front focus with the shutter focusing and taking the picture. Decoupled, no such front focus! I am still talking about AF-S for both modes (although I do sometimes use AF-C). But unlike the other threads I am getting the shots with use AF-S without having to move to AF-C as suggested even for static targets in these threads. What the heck? Why is there such a difference between the AF-ON and shutter? Surely these should be the same...
