As was suggested, you should try to reduce the full discharge flashes, this could mean opening up aperture, shooting closer subjects only, increasing ISO's, avoiding bounce when unfeasible (though I highly recommend continuing to bounce if indoors).

New batteries may help, but even with Eneloops, recycle times are slow if you're doing full discharges.

You could pick up a used FL50, it takes 4 batteries, so recycles much faster, and also has capacity to shoot brighter levels.  I happen to have one kicking around that I haven't used in a couple years (as well as a FL36 lol), shoot me a msg if you're interested, I'll give you a good deal!
