& that's my point - they only changed what they physically had to to incorporate the change required.

You say that they had the parts & moulds from earlier models but a) they obviously would have required more change to the camera body (at least for the strap mounts) which means more cost & b) they may not - moulds wear out & Sony are very good at production engineering so I suspect that they have relatively little stock inventory especially of obsolete parts.

In something like this you have what Marketing/Sales Planning wants & a budget for it & Engineering has to deliver what they can for that budget.
