Strap on tripod mount collar is an option, but not my usual way of operation and much more dangling than lens facing down and camera attached by one lug and grip-lug.

I bet that using the tripod collar on the lens feels more solid, but still not ideal (for me).

Have you tried the Black Rapid solution of using the tripod mount as the point of attachment for the strap?
I made my own BR-style sling strap from an old Think Tank strap. This style of strap really alleviates concerns about stress on the lens mount when you are walking around for long periods of time with a large lens on the camera.
When I would do a football game (which is all about doing 40yd. wind sprints every time the ball changes possession) it used to concern me even with the E5.

I really hope the E-M1 will feel more solid because it would allow me to use the camera and my straps just like I prefer.

It will.
