If you're looking for support for large, high-resolution external monitors, get a laptop that has either a MiniDisplayPort output or a Thunderbolt output.  Laptops with one of these ports can usually drive DisplayPort monitors at up to 2560x1600 pixels (a common resolution for 30-inch screens).

HDMI can be useful for hooking up projectors or HDTVs, and there are revisions of HDMI that allow for driving 2560x1600 pixel monitors.  The problem is that some HDMI implementations are limited to 1920x1200 pixels (monitors) or 1080p (HDTVs).  This includes the HDMI outputs on the Retina MacBook Pros, but also many HDMI outputs on many PC laptops.
