Same analogy. If you want a small, light cheap camera for snagging snapshots with fairly decent image quality, then point and shoots can work. If you need to sell your work to National Geographic, then you need that DSLR with good glass and a hefty price tag.
Like I said, you have to match the mission with the right tool.
