I wanted to keep it simple, so I though 50 1.4 and 17-40L. I can still buy the 24 - 105 (not sure what version) but feel its not wide enough on my 1DMK3 which I want to bring. Cruise is in Eastern Canada finishing in New York City. Will stay in New York City for a couple of days.

I would buy the 24-105L f/4 IS (this is the only version--you can get a very good price on new-but-without-a-box lenses that come from disassembled kit sales of the 5d3 + 24-105). This is a perfect travel lens. The IS will give you a lot of flexibility in travel shooting, and the 24 mm should be wide enough for most situations.

Your 17-40, of course, is not an IS (typo on your part). If you can take other lenses, I would add the 17-40, and then possible the 50 1.4 to give you more light gathering in dim interiors.

But, don't be afraid to push up the ISO to keep the shutter fast and the images sharp--you can fix a lot of noise these days. Nothing ruins a picture more than camera movement.
