Dave, I would agree with you that up to now, for larger sensor  systems, PDAF on sensor has not been a success though the Nikon 1 series is supposedly very good.
But (rumours again) Sony is supposedly moving all their SLT cameras across to PDAF on sensor and the first cameras will be released in September.

Sony are unlikely to do this unless they have solved the problems. They have a lot to lose if they get it wrong as it will effectively cripple their dSLR range (though of course they will no longer have mirrors)

Canon likewise have a new version on their 70D camera which is much improved.

And Olympus is supposed to have access to the latest Sony sensors as part of their partnership/technology sharing agreement.

It's looking increasingly likely that Sony will make an M43 version of their new APSC sensor for Olympus.
