When using the term correctly, a zoom lens is defined as a lens that can vary focal length while maintaining focus as focal length changes. However, the word zoom has been applied to any variable focal length lens without regard to focusing since around WWII.

As far as I know, there are no (or only a few) true still camera zoom lenses that maintain focus as you zoom. On some wider zooms, the focus shift because of zoom can be so small that it is indistinguishable, but it's there. I am told by a friend who is knowledgeable of such things that some true zooms are made for motion picture and similar cameras.
