in my world (technology) the golden mantra was "noone ever got fired for buying IBM"  .. perhaps in the photography world (and I say that as a NEX5R owner feeling your pain lenswise) "noone ever got shafted buying nikon"

if you bought a nikon prime 30 years ago you can still use it today in manual focus mode on nikons and if you have looked after it its still worth a pretty penny today .. if i were to drop a big chunk of change on a lens collection I'd want to make sure I'd be able to usefully use it with the next few generations of cameras and ideally be worth a chunk of change at the end of it

To be fair canon is probably the same

Not sure about the longevity of the plastic lenses though nowadays
