The drive...

I usually start in the south out of L.A area to catch the entire coast. However it is the most winding, curved route and it is an easier, faster drive to go up Hwy 5 straight to Carmel then drop south.

Bug Sur is much closer to the Carmel end and a less twisted route. It saves tome, but you miss places like Cambria, San Simeon, Morro Bay, etc. But you're in the heart of Big Sur sooner from Carmel.

I've done that, too and think on any future trip I'd do that. You can always come back to SoCal on the slower, winding route coming back if you wanted to.
