Hiking with GR

Yesterday I went out hiking in the woods (Södermanland, Sweden) with my family. I brought the GR to see if I could come to terms with the 28mm equivalent lens. My Nikon DSLR is to heavy lugging around all day. The last picture shos my "GR hiking setup" with a Lowepro Apex 30 attached to my daypack - the perfect lightweight/compact camera solution for me.

All in all the GR works really fine for me when hiking in woody landscapes. When hiking in the northern parts of Sweden, above the tree line, I could probably use a normal or tele focal length as well. But I don't miss the weight of the lenses...

Wow, very nice photos and those woods look like a great place for a hike. It reminds me of some of the hikes I've taken in New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Very nice, thanks for sharing.

I like your case and where it is attached. I am an avid hiker and currently use a Fuji X10 and am waiting for my GR to arrive on Tuesday. I normally use 28/35 mm on the X10 for my hiking landscape shots so I should feel right at home with the GR. I may end up buying an OVF, I have to see how the lcd works in the bright Arizona light.

Nice to see families hiking together.

What a wonderful set of photos. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Jerry, I've found that the screen on my GRD4 is bright enough for most daytime shooting, while the one on the GXR is not. I assume the GR(5) will probably be bright enough for you.

What a lovely set of photos! 7 and 10 are my favorites. I was wondering how you did the post processing for those images? It is a lovely greenish pastel with this faded look that is common in today's wedding photography, and I'm wondering how you achieved it :)

Thanks! I have only been to cities in California myself so I can't really compare the landscapes. But from what I've heard parts of New England and Maine resembles pretty much of the southern/middle parts of Sweden. Most Swede emigrants ended up in Minnesota though.

Thanks Daniel - I have checked out your site/portfolio and thats pretty impressive so I am not sure I have anything at all to teach you... :-)

I pretty much only work with RAW-files and with LR (4.4). I sometimes use my own or others presets but usually ends up tweaking them - I am pretty much post processing using my gut feeling rather than fixed presets, and one potential problem with this workflow is of course inconsistency...

To keep it short I pull down clarity, vibrance and saturation with about 15-25%. Increase contrast a bit and, if necessary, exposure and/or light (pulling down highlights at the same time) as well as adjusting the shadows/blacks. Then you will probably need to adjust the Temp (about 6300-6500) and Tint (about -50) depending on the original WB.

Then play around a bit with the yellow, orange and green saturation and luminance to find the right "color mood".

Well that was a pretty confusing tutorial - best of luck ;-)

Great pics! I really like 10 & 13. Hmm, I thought I stopped obsessing about the GR.

Interesting coloration to your shots. It brings out the hiking mood.

I'm puzzled about the Apex 30. I'm currently using a Rezo 50, from my LX-3 days. I tried the Apex 30 in the store, but didn't think the GR would fit in it. Any comments?

Hey Breidabick! Thank you so much for the kind words and for taking a look at my work! And thanks for the tutorial, it was great! I'll experiment and get back to you.

Can you believe I still have this new camera syndrome with my Ricoh GR, where I never really use it because it is... too new... to use? It is inexplicable!

Very awesome shots, the sunlight coming through the trees makes that one look so beautiful and artistic. Need more practice with my GR. Also hows that Apex 30 AW working out for you. I picked up the leather GR case off ebay but i am looking for a case for my more rugged outings.

Nice series of photos. I like your composition and post-processing. The slightly faded look, in this context, gives many of the photos a somewhat otherworldly, dreamy quality.

Thanks, very kind of you! The Apex 30 AW works very fine for me. The GR really fills it out but if you are not using a VF or hood its a perfect bag for a bit more rugged conditions.

Thank you Logan. I am a little bit skeptical about the faded look - it seem to be quite popular and maybe even over used these days - but in this case I found it a nice way to PP.
