There's another reason why people might see kit lenses on entry level DSLRs.
There are people, like me, who practice photography but do so on a tight budget. The d3100 I purchased pretty much soaked up all of my savings. This basically means I'll be seen on the street with my kit lens for atleast 6 more months until I can buy the 50mm 1.8 I have my eye on. I'd say this is true for most people in my age range who also practice photography. We've made the commitment and are just working with what we have at the moment.
