Maybe stupid focus plane question

When we talk about a focus plane, is it a real flat plane or the surface of a sphere?

For example, If I focus on a flat wall 10' away, the wall at center of the photo is indeed 10' away, but at the edges it is farther.  So, if we're really talking abut a flat plane, in a narrow DOF situation, these edges will be OOF. Or do lens designs take this geometry into account?
