Since most of the new Bodies shoot 6400-12800 ISO better than ever, is f2.8 really neccesary!

The new bodies certainly have lower noise that the older ones, but they are also much better at the lower end, so fast lenses are also useful for obtaining the maximum quality in lower light, and/or interior shots.

I should  think for action shots, inside sports etc, a fast lens, plus high iso is useful for stopping the action.

I really like the 35 1.8 lens on my D300 - which is an old body, so I am very glad these lenses are available and at reasonable prices!
