Why is printing the de facto standard?

... a "photograph" IS a piece of paper with a silver or dye image on it: the same as a "painting" is a piece of canvas with an oil-suspended pigment image on it. A digital file may be many things, it may be used with great advantage in many different circumstances, but it is not a "photograph"; just as the digital file of a computer scan of a painting is not a "painting" - it is a digital file. Such file may be displayed on a computer screen, but that fact does not make the file either a painting or a photograph.
