THe old "rule of thumb" from my film days was that a lens was sharpest at 2-3 stops down deom maximum aperture.  With these small sensors, designers are now using lenses that are sharpest very near maximum aperture.  For my FZ200 with its f/2.8 constant aperture, the sharpest setting is f/3.2, and f/4 is already back to where f/2.8 is; although both are very close to f/3.2.  The situation with my S90 and G15 is pretty much the same and it explains why the program keeps the aperture wide.
