Why is printing the de facto standard?

About that archiving thing...

I inherited a photo album that was started by my great-grandmother in the 1870s.  Even the newspaper clippings survived intact.

Meanwhile, I cannot open files I created three years ago using software that did not survive the migration to Windows 7.  I have Zip drives, too.  And floppies, both 3-1/4 inch and 5-1/2.  Just saying.

Great-Grandpa Clarence has doubts about digital archives and prefers physical media.
