Yes, I find the 100-300 good for bugs too.   And I am also afflicted by that strange bokeh also when there is high contrast in the background.

And in this case,

double bokeh a few months ago...

note double imaging in the brush.

Anders W gave me some good information on bokeh, but I still have a long ways to go to control it to fit what I want as a result.  This helped:
