This post brings up an interesting dilemma with this lens.  Creative use of the velbon piece. Hand held shots can be done with good light and high shutter speed(more is better).  Tripod use is iffy since(at least for me) the camera is extremely unbalanced at 300mm. My manfrotto ballhead can not hold it without drooping. Of course it only will work on something stationary.  If you are using for moving objects I have often thought of a gimbal head. Here is my question to anybody who would know:  Can you balance this lens without a collar?
