Ron Tolmie / 3mm minimum sensor size

Ron,

I've been trying to hunt down the origin of the '3mm is the cutoff' statement, and the best I've been able to find is this thread

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3244118

In that context, Ianperegian recently showed (for ZS19 series cameras) that the resolution depended on the f number across the range of focal lengths, constant resolution at f/3.3 to 5, and then a falloff as f number increased above 5.

At f/8, the resolution was essentially constant (albeit diminished from maximum) thru the entire zoom range

So...my questions are

Where does the 3mm number from?

How does the 3mm fit with Ian's resolution pattern in the FZ19 ?

Thanks

Sherm
