MBP SSD Upgrade question

Sorry if this has been covered but I am trying to find out if replacing my current hard drive in my 17" mbp with a new SSD is possible and if it would be a significant bump in operational speed/worth the money.

My computer is a 17" MacBookPro running 10.7.5. Processor is a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Memory is 8 GB 1067 MHZ DDR3. Graphics card NVIDIA GeFOrce 9400m 256 MB.

This was pretty much near the top of the food chain several years ago. The machine is in excellent condition but of course, I would like to speed things up a bit.

I used someones air the other day with a SSD and was blown away with its' speed with regards to startup. Applications opening and other functions that took a fraction of the time.

Quickly looking it seems that I could upgrade (if possible) the drive to a SSD drive for around $1,000.00 which I would be comfortable doing provided it was a big boost in speed.

Real world input much appreciated.
