Cropping as a form of zooming for DX camera

I'm thinking of getting a fast standard zoom (17-50 2.8 is the likely candidate). I love the idea of a constant aperature. however, I think that the long end might be a limitation in some cases.

I now have a D7000. I'm wondering if I went to a D7100, would I be able to take advantage of the 50% larger chip (24mp vs. 16) to occasionally crop in order to isolate an element of a shot while preserving good detail. My theory is that the crop might have an effective size that's similar to my current camera so I wouldn't lose resolution from my current state but would, in effect, gain some zoom power. Is this a bad idea?
