That's just one review. Have you considered that maybe Kurt Munger tested a poor example of the lens?

There are some extremely positive reviews of the 18-135 lens around. The user reviews at Dyxum are generally very good, and you'll notice that a number of them compare it favourably with the 18-55.

I've compared both lenses myself and find that the 18-135 is clearly superior. Mine is a very sharp lens, and only really requires distortion correction at the widest end. The fast, quiet focusing and DMF also give it a real advantage over the standard Sony kit lens.

For me the 18-135 has been a real "kit killer" as my 18-55 kit lens has been stuck in a drawer since I upgraded to it.
