Canon 300 f2.8 II, screw in filter vs gelatin filter.

I shoot air shows at slow shutter speeds to capture prop blur. In bright sunlight this results in large f numbers. Of course this means every speck of dust on my sensor shows in the image.
To counter this, I'll use a ND filter. The 300 II lens comes with a gelatin filter holder. An option is a holder for a screw-in filter. The screw-in filter seems like it would be easier to change in the field.

However, on another Canon forum, one person said the screw-in didn't work well when a tc was used, and resulted in reduced IQ. He advised only using a gelatin filter.

Gelatin or screw-in, what's your experience. And if using a screw-in, did you have any problems using a tc?
